The 2022 Kia Rio sedan now starts at $16,150 for the base LX model. A step up to the S model costs just $640 more. That upgrade adds cruise control, keyless entry, more USB ports, and a split-folding rear seat. Kia offers a hatchback model only in S trim, for $17,090.
All Rios also require a $995 destination fee.
There is just one option offered — a Technology Package. It comes with automatic climate control, push-button start, and some automated safety features like forward-collision warning and lane-keeping assist. It adds $1,800 to the price.
The Rio gets just one visible change for 2022 — Kia’s new corporate logo.
In a class where shoppers are primarily concerned with value, the Rio is known for its excellent 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. But it isn’t a bare-bones machine. It features standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a fuel economy rating of 33 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined.
The list of cars Americans can buy for less than $20,000 keeps shrinking. The Rio remains more expensive than the Chevy Spark (currently starting at $13,600), Hyundai Accent ($15,395), Mitsubishi Mirage ($14,295), and Nissan Versa ($14,980). But it is the only car in its class to offer a 10-year warranty, which may add peace of mind that justifies the small extra cost.
