Price: We expect the price of the 2023 Toyota Prius hybrid to start at approximately $26,000. The cost of the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid should start at around $29,000.
The 2023 Toyota Prius continues to be the darling of anyone looking for an efficient and spacious hybrid with excellent fuel economy and room for up to five onboard. While the Prius is not known for getting any pulses racing due to its wild speed and performance, this 4-door hatchback is affordable and easily gets more than 50 mpg during city and highway driving.
We fully expect the Prius to enter a new generation with the onset of the 2023 model year. While it’s still popular, the Prius is starting to get overshadowed by full electric or partially electrified rivals — not to mention Toyota’s own RAV4 Hybrid SUV.
Of course, Toyota will gladly offer hybrid shoppers the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The latest model can travel solely on electric power for approximately 25 miles. That model is reviewed separately.
What should we expect to find in a new and improved Prius? A sportier and more expressive exterior design is a good start, something aligned with the bolder look of the 2022 Prius Prime. This would help set the Prius apart from direct rivals, including the Hyundai Ioniq, and give it a more youthful appeal.
The powertrain will continue to consist of a small-displacement 4-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor and battery pack. Fuel economy should tick upward slightly, perhaps to more than 60 mpg on the most efficient trims.
While the cabin of the Prius has always been roomy, the control layout in the center of the dashboard — not to mention the tiny gear-lever sprouting from the dash — has been a quirk of this fuel-sipping car since it first arrived roughly 20 years ago. It remains to be seen how creative and futuristic Toyota will get with the interior design of the 2023 Prius.
Standard features will continue to include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a long lineup of active safety features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing wipers.
