The luxury vehicle market is a pretty tough field in the automotive world, and there are a lot of high-end luxury cars to choose from. Still, while these models may cost a lot of money, many suffer from a few issues. As a result, there are only three luxury midsize sedans recommended by Consumer Reports. Here’s a look at the three luxury midsize sedans that Consumer Reports recommends.
2022 Lexus ES
According to Consumer Reports, the Lexus ES is the lowest-rated luxury midsize sedan that earned a recommendation from reviewers. Its overall score of 83 out of 100 is much higher than the following highest-rated cars in the segment. For comparison, the runner-ups received a 68 out of 100.
The ES starts at a price tag of about $41,000, and it scored very well on its tests. It received an 84 out of 100 on its road test, and unsurprisingly, it performed very well in terms of its predicted reliability rating. Lexus cars are known to be reliable, and the ES received a 4 out of 5 in terms of its predicted reliability score. However, its predicted owner satisfaction score was a bit lower at a 3 out of 5.
The Lexus ES offers a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as standard, which provides 203 horsepower. However, the ES also has a 3.5-liter V6 engine option, which bumps up to 302 horsepower. A hybrid powertrain is available too. Overall, while the ES is not the fastest luxury sedan, it has enough power to provide a smooth and comfortable ride.
2022 BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series starts at about $54,000, and its Consumer Reports score narrowly beat the Lexus ES. This BMW got an overall score of 85 out of 100, largely thanks to the 5 Series’ remarkable performance in Consumer Reports’ road test. It received a 94 out of 100 on that test, but it didn’t perform as well in other areas. Its predicted reliability rating is only a 3 out of 5, but its predicted owner satisfaction rating is a 4 out of 5.
The 5 Series performed well on its road test for various reasons, but some of those reasons had to do with its powertrain. BMW offers many engine options for this model, and the standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that gets 248 horsepower. Not only does the BMW 5 Series offer a hybrid option, but BMW also has four compelling V8 engine options. The most powerful one is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 that produces 627 horsepower.
That said, the 5 Series also has a wide range in costs. While it starts at $54,000, the most expensive luxury version comes in at $142,000.
2022 Audi A6
The best luxury midsize sedan right now, according to Consumer Reports, is the Audi A6. It starts at about $56,000, making it roughly comparable to the BMW 5 Series but far more expensive than the Lexus ES. The A6 has an overall score of 87 out of 100, and just like the BMW, this was primarily thanks to its excellent road test score of 93 out of 100.
The predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction scores of the A6 were lower. It received a 4 out of 5 for its predicted reliability rating and a 3 out of 5 for its predicted owner satisfaction rating. Like the BMW 5 Series, however, Consumer Reports praised how the A6 performed, largely thanks to its engines.
The Audi A6 starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that offers 261 horsepower, and Audi has three other options available. The most powerful engine is a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 that gets 591 horsepower.
