LAS VEGAS (KLAS)– Three people were killed, including two children, in a Sunday crash in Nye County and a driver is facing charges after being suspected of impairment and causing that crash.
Nevada State Police said the collision occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on the U.S. 95 at mile marker 27 near Amargosa Valley killing a man, a young boy, and a girl. Two other people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and a dog was killed in the crash.
A preliminary investigation shows a silver Volvo had been traveling northbound on the U.S. 95 when it failed to stay in the travel lane and entered the southbound lanes of U.S. 95. The Volvo sideswiped a truck towing a camper, and hit a GMC Yukon. No one was injured in those two vehicles.
The Volvo then crashed into a grey Chrysler minivan headed southbound.
The Volvo crashed into the front right side of the minivan killing the three people sitting on that side of the van. There were two adults and three children in the minivan. The man, boy, and girl all died at the scene. The woman and the other boy were transported to Univerity Medical Center in Las Vegas. The woman was airlifted with major but non-life-threatening injuries and the boy was transported by ambulance with moderate injuries. Both are expected to survive.
After crashing into the minivan, the driver in the Volvo then continued northbound in the southbound travel lanes of U.S. 95 where he struck a white camper van causing it to roll. The female and male occupants both had minor injuries but were not transported for medical attention.
State police say the silver Volvo was driven by an adult male who was arrested for suspected impairment and taken to a detention center in Nye County.
As a result of the crash, U.S. 95 between State Route 160 to State Route 373 was closed for several hours while officials investigated the deadly crash. The highway reopened around 6 p.m.
The crash happened about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
