Two people were killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in the Washington Park neighborhood Monday night, according to Chicago police.
Authorities were called to the 600 block of East Morgan Drive around 8:30 p.m. after getting a report that a red SUV traveling east struck “the driver-side door of a silver Chrysler sedan, which was also traveling east,” according to an online media notification from police. The driver of the red SUV apparently “sideswiped” the silver sedan, officials said.

The lone occupant of the silver sedan, a male driver, was not hurt and later refused medical treatment. The fatalities and serious injuries occurred when the red SUV, occupied by four people “veered off the road and struck a tree,” police said.
The driver, a 35-year-old man, was removed from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene. A 23-year-old woman who had been in the front passenger seat also was removed from the SUV and pronounced dead. Police spokeswoman Kellie Bartoli said in a Tuesday morning email that the crash report had not been finalized and she was unable to say whether the two people who died had been ejected from the SUV upon impact or if paramedics pulled them from the vehicle.

In the back seat of the red SUV, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old man had to be extracted from the SUV, police said. They were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where both had been listed in fair condition with “unspecified injuries to the body.”
Bartoli said no additional information was available and she could not answer questions regarding the make, model and year of the vehicles involved.
The crash remains under investigation by police. The names of the two people who died had not been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as of Tuesday morning.
