The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the hottest model in Subaru of America’s lineup, and it just picked up a best-in-segment award. It’s no surprise that Crosstrek wins another award. Subaru announced the 2022 Crosstrek topped its segment, winning 2022 Subcompact SUV of the Year from the auto123.com awards. The Subaru Legacy is a surprise and wins the Car of the Year award in the Midsize/Full-size segment.
For the 2022 awards, the expert panel comprised a core team of veteran contributors and test drivers, content managers, and editors, placing votes in 22 designated categories for the vehicles considered the best and most noteworthy.

Commenting on the methodology, Auto123.com stated, “the winners of the annual Auto123.com awards are chosen early in the new year from an initial list of eligible vehicles, which is not limited to all-new or substantially revised models. In other words, a model might be ‘aging,’ but if it’s still better than all the others in its segment in the view of Auto123’s panelists, it will be the top choice.”

What sets the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek apart from the competition?
In selecting its winners, the automotive website picked the refreshed Subaru Crosstrek for its looks, all-wheel-drive system, and multiple powertrain options. These three factors helped it beat out its newer competitors.
Our take
The Subaru Crosstrek comes with standard Symmetrical all-wheel-drive and 8.7-inches of ground clearance which no competitor exceeds. The Crosstrek Base and Premium trim levels come with the standard X-Mode for more severe winter driving and off-road excursions.
One of the significant changes for the refresh also included giving the Crosstrek Sport and Limited a dual-function X-Mode for added off-pavement performance. It consists of a Deep Snow/Deep Mud setting.
The refreshed 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Sport and Limited trim levels come with a new 2.5-liter Boxer engine with 30 additional horsepower over the standard 2.0-liter engine. The larger engine doesn’t sacrifice fuel mileage.
What is the Crosstrek fuel mileage?
The Subaru Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims with the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine get an EPA estimated 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg.
The Base and Premium trim levels use a 2.0-liter engine that gets 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic, contributing to better mileage. The 6-speed manual Crosstrek gets an EPA estimated 22/29 city/highway and 25 combined mpg.
What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek?
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek comes in five trim levels for customers. The Base trim has an MSRP of $23,570, Premium ($24,720), Sport ($27,920), Limited ($29,420) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($37,895). Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,125).
The auto123.com SUV of the year awards give three reasons why the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the best subcompact SUV; its looks, all-wheel-drive system, and multiple powertrain options.
