Get into a sharp-lookin' 2022 Kia EV6 electric vehicle for under $35,000? As with the prices for many EVs not made by Tesla, that MSRP counts... if you take into account an available federal tax credit. Exclude that allowance, and the new EV6 starts at over $40,000—the same pricing waters that Volkswagen's ID4, Hyundai's Ioniq 5, and Ford's Mustang Mach-E swim in. We'll give you the numbers and let you decide how to treat the $7,500 potential federal vehicle tax credit.
The 2022 Kia EV6 SUV crossover is Kia's first dedicated battery electric model, meaning there is no gasoline or hybrid option attached to the nameplate. (The brand's earlier Soul EV was, of course, converted from a regular Soul.) The numeric portion of the nameplate identifies its position in the lineup, indicating we could see smaller and larger Kia BEV models with names that begin with "EV;" an electric sub-brand could be on the way, too. Kia says the EV6 is the first of 11 all-new electric vehicles to be launched by 2026.
Like the related Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 utilizes Hyundai-Kia's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP); it has the same wheelbase as a midsize three-row Telluride SUV. Its main competitors are the similarly priced Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID4, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
A cool feature of the EV6 is its "Vehicle to Load" charging. Thanks to a 110V power outlet on the second-row seat base, you can plug electronic devices and appliances like a refrigerator into the car. Cool beans! It can output up to 1900 watts and run at maximum output for 36 hours.
What are the EV6 trims?
There are three trim levels for the 2022 EV6 (Light, Wind, and GT-Line), two battery pack sizes (58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh), and two powertrains (rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive). Pricing ranges from $42,115 to $57,115, not including the federal tax credit, which, as stated, would reduce those numbers by $7,500. The entry-level EV6s offer up to 320 horsepower and an EPA all-electric range of up to 310 miles.
The GT-Line is not the same as the forthcoming 576-hp GT model. Rather, according to the Kia website, the GT-Line combines exclusive looks, upgraded features, and techy-goodness: exclusive exterior and interior trim; power sunroof; 20-inch wheels for the AWD; suede and vegan leather seating trim; Blind-Spot View Monitor; Surround View Monitor; Augmented Reality Head-Up Display; Remote Smart Park Assist; and Highway Drive Assist 2. The website does not address Light or Wind trims, but references an EX+. The configurator is not live yet.
