Genesis is still a relatively new luxury brand, but the South Korean automaker is still looking toward its all-electric future. Last year, Genesis unveiled the Genesis X Coupe concept as a preview of what’s to come on the design front from the brand’s future vehicles. At this year’s New York Auto Show, Genesis arrived with a new concept called the X Speedium Coupe. It’s a new take on the X Coupe concept from last year and it features an even more stunning design.
Compared to the old Genesis X Coupe concept, the X Speedium has an updated design. While the X Coupe concept was a traditional coupe, the new X Speedium has slightly longer proportions for a different side profile. Genesis is calling the X Speedium a coupe, but this is more along the lines of a two-door hatchback or a shooting brake.
Genesis didn’t provide any pictures of the X Speedium concept’s interior, but we expect the new design to bring a more spacious cabin. Other changes include a new grille that ditches the mesh design for a body-color panel and light bars in the shape of a triangle, while the air intakes on the lower part of the front fascia have been enlarged. The rear end of the X Speedium concept has a larger rear spoiler that now features an integrated rear taillight and there’s a more prominent rear diffuser. Genesis has fitted the concept with updated wheels that are far more intricate than the five-spoke ones on the old X Coupe concept.
While most automakers pull names out of thin air for concepts or use odd mathematical formulas as names, the Speedium moniker comes from a racetrack in Korea. It may seem odd to see Genesis update an old concept, but that’s what makes the X Speedium different from other concepts. Chief creative officer for Genesis, Luc Donckerwolke, stated that the X Speedium “isn’t a show car – it’s a look into our design processes as we explore ideas for the next wave of EVs, one that incorporates Genesis’ DNA.”
Hopefully, we’ll get to see Genesis incorporate some of the design elements of the X Speedium concept into future EVs. The Automaker announced that it will be going all-in on EVs by 2030 with six models for the U.S. We don’t see Genesis coming out with a production version of the X Speedium anytime soon, but it could be a model that Genesis explores in the future.
