If so, it would share much with the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, just in Dodge form!

The in-yer-face Dodge brand has made plenty of bank shilling vehicles with outsized power and personalities, including its Durango SUV. If a report from the crew at Mopar Insiders is accurate (and they usually are) the Durango name will soon be applied to a variant of the new Jeep Wagoneer.

Citing unnamed but apparently well-informed sources, the site suggests the present-day Durango – with its unibody structure and array of available engines, ranging from a 3.6L V6 to the psychotic 700-plus-hp Hellcat V8 – will cease to be built in favour of bumping production numbers for the Grand Cherokee and three-row Grand Cherokee L.

To be sure, the addition of a third row (finally!) to the GC line will likely spur demand, especially if the world’s supply chain ever straightens out to pre-pandemic levels.
In its place, according to the rumours, will be a Durango built on the same bones used to construct the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Alert readers will know that structure is the same as is hove under a Ram 1500 pickup truck, explaining why the Wagoneer is such a massive machine in terms of its dimensions. This change would place Durango in competition with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition, to name just two.

Here’s a fun fact: when taking design proposals for the then-new original Jeep Grand Cherokee, a group from Dodge put forth their ideas in an effort to convince company brass that such a rig with that brand’s styling cues would be a hit. Someone at Jeep must have had a lot of pull, since the concept never saw the light of day — not to mention a butched-up Caravan was also deep-sixed around the same time.
In any event, it seems like that might not be the case this time around if Jeep is willing to share its toys.
