The Bottom Line: What is a M440i? The M440i is a hatchback sport sedan manufactured by the German car builder known as BMW. The 2022 M440i 4 Series Gran Coupe is the latest coupe style 4 door from BMW. The company takes the standard 4 Series coupe, itself a 2 door version of the 3 Series sedan, stretches it slightly, adds a set of rear doors, and replaces the trunk lid with a hatchback cover.
Despite its changes, the Gran Coupe isn’t much larger than any other 4 Series. Its 188.5 inch length compares to 187.9 for the 2 door coupe. Its 112.4 inch wheelbase is only 0.2 inch longer. Height is the biggest difference: the Gran Coupe stands 56.8 inches tall, and the coupe 54.6 inches. It looks like a sport coupe, but has 4 doors, and a larger cargo area.
The M440i is considered a grand touring car, best suited for long highway stints. It’s got M Sport seats, a nice large iDrive screen, and all the creature comforts you could ask for.
The M440i uses a 6 cylinder engine in the BMW tradition, in this case, a 382 HP horsepower, turbocharged 3.0L liter unit combined with a 48 volt mild hybrid system, to boost acceleration and fuel economy.
BMW designed the 4 Series Gran Coupe for drivers who want to combine the practicality of the 3 Series, and the styling and appeal of the 4 Series. This car is still a sedan, with four frameless doors, and a reasonably sized cargo area, under a big hatchback lid.
To showcase this model, BMW sent me a 2022 M440i xDrive Gran Coupe with a base window sticker price of $58,200 to test drive and review. The options on the press car are: the metallic paint for $1,500, the Cognac leather interior for $1,450, the drivers assistance pro package for $1,700, the parking assistance package for $700, the premium package for $1,750, the cooling and HP tire package for $2,400, the SensaTec dashboard for $350, and the Harmon Kardon surround sound audio system for $875.
The total MSRP manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including the $995 destination fee, is: $69,920. After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the total purchase price came to: $78,660. As the luxury price threshold is $75,000, this BMW crosses the luxury model car line, and puts it in the near $80 Grand cost category.
With money comes power, so you get a 3.0L liter BMW M Twin Turbo 24 valve inline 6 cylinder engine with 48 volt eBoost mild hybrid technology, bolted to an 8 speed M Sport automatic transmission. Then power is routed to a BMW xDrive AWD all wheel drive traction system, with M Sport differentials, monitored by a M Sport driving dynamics control system, with various sport driving modes. Power, traction, and stability all rolled into one driveline that has the ability to drive on the 48 volt electric motor in town.
Handling and braking are trademarks of BMW, and the M440i takes your ride and drive to a new level. This model has dynamic stability control, traction control, M Sport 4 wheel ventilated anti lock brakes with red calipers, dynamic brake control, cornering brake control, active driving assistance pro, and an M Sport suspension. Now you have the stability and control you need to enjoy the twisty roads during the work week, and still have the cargo room to go to Costco on the weekends.
Fuel economy is 29 MPG highway, 22 MPG city and 25 MPG combined. The greenhouse gas rating is a 5, and the smog rating is a 5, both out of 10. All great numbers for a luxury sedan with the looks, comfort and power of a BMW M Sport Gran Coupe.
BMW pioneered the Ultimate Care Maintenance program that covers all BMW’s for the first 3 years, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, for all scheduled maintenance at no charge. Zero, zilch, nada out of pocket costs to you for all services for up to 3 years. That is what BMW is all about, quality, safety, power and reliability, all rolled into one brand.
So, when you’re ready to buy a new luxury sport sedan the M440i should be on your ride and drive list, as it’s one the most up to date sport sedans for sale today. Call, click or visit your local BMW dealer for a test drive, and a Bottom Line price review, on the 2022 BMW M440i. And remember that the base price for a new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe starts at only $44,800. BMW – The Ultimate Driving Machine.
