A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night while running toward an ice cream truck in Buckner Terrace, Dallas police said.
The boy was hit around 8:15 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Delafield Lane, near Buckner Boulevard, police said. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Messiah Glover.
Police said Glover ran toward an ice cream truck parked on a curb. The boy then ran out in front of an SUV, driven by a 53-year-old woman, as it passed the parked truck. He was taken to a hospital and died, police said.
Police said the woman did not see Glover, and she stopped whenshe realized what happened. No charges are expected to be filed.
Trevor Davis, 30, who lives in the complex’s brick and stucco buildings, said Thursday he heard “howling” and “crying” late Wednesday night. He said he noticed the white van with “Ice Cream” printed on the side and an SUV stopped in the complex’s main thoroughfare.
Davis said he later saw an ambulance and a woman standing distraught nearby with blood on her shirt.
“It’s really sad,” he said, standing outside his apartment just past the gated front entrance. “I have three [kids] myself, and that’s just really sad.”
Davis and neighbors said the ice cream truck often drives throughthe complex after school when kids are seen playing or running through the cul-de-sacs.
The complex, tucked in the corner of Delafield Lane and Hoyle Avenue, is flanked by two playgrounds: a large one toward the front complete with a jungle gym and a small playpen. Styrofoam cups and plastic spoons, with remnants of ice cream or slushes, were scattered by the playpen.
A large stain of what appeared to be blood covered the sidewalk outside Tommessia Roberts’ unit Thursday afternoon. Roberts said she saw yellow tape outside her complex around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
“I was just looking at [the police] outside my door,” she said. “We heard people out here yelling and crying.”
