The Consumer Reports (by subscription) updated ranking of the top SUVs says the 2022 Subaru Forester compact SUV, 2022 Outback midsize SUV, and 2022 Crosstrek subcompact SUV make up 30 percent of the ten best SUVs of any size you can buy today. The high-scoring models score well in performance, reliability, safety, and owner satisfaction.

CR’s ten best SUVs are ranked from first to 10th. The Kia Telluride scores number one with a score of 97. The Hyundai Tucson is number two (93 points), followed by the 2022 Subaru Forester (90), Toyota RAV4 Prime (88), Toyota Highlander (88), Hyundai Palisade (87), 2022 Subaru Crosstrek (86), 2022 Subaru Outback (85), Mazda CX-9 (84), and Chevrolet Traverse (83).
The 2022 Forester is ranked #1 of twenty-three compact SUVs
CR says the Forester “boasts a roomy interior, great fuel economy, and plenty of standard equipment. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a continuously variable transmission yields an excellent 28 mpg overall. The cabin has plenty of space, with a particularly generous rear seat for a small SUV and easy access. The controls are simple to use, including an infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.”
Where does the Forester need improvement?
“Acceleration from the 182 horsepower engine isn’t exactly exhilarating, though, and it gets loud when pushed’ said the new report.

For the 2022 model change Forester comes in six trim levels; The base Forester starts at $26,320, Premium ($29,320), Sport ($30,890), Limited ($33,000), new Wilderness ($33,945), and Touring ($36,420). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,125).

CR says, “The Crosstrek is an appealing option for buyers who want a small, versatile SUV. It delivers a good fuel economy, 29 mpg overall, from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to a continuously variable transmission. All Crosstreks deliver impressive ride comfort and competent and enjoyable handling on curvy roads. The infotainment system is also easy to use.”
Where does the Crosstrek need improvement?
“The Crosstrek isn’t very quick, though, and when drivers mash the throttle to accelerate, the engine gets loud. A more powerful 2.5-liter is a newly available option. There’s also a plug-in hybrid version, but while its 33 mpg overall fuel economy is quite good, the high purchase price hurts its value, “ the report says.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek comes in five trim levels for customers. The base trim has an MSRP of $23,570, Premium ($24,720), Sport ($27,920), Limited ($29,420) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($37,895). Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,125).

CR says, “The Outback looks more like a raised wagon than a traditional compact or midsized SUV, yet it’s a formidable competitor for either. It has a solid feel, with a very comfortable ride that outshines even some luxury SUVs. The high ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive help make the Outback ready to tackle light off-road duties. We were impressed with its handling agility in our accident-avoidance maneuver, which simulates swerving around a vehicle or an obstacle on the road. The uplevel 260-hp, turbocharged engine (denoted as XT in trim names) grants the Outback effortless punch and a quieter demeanor.”

The 2022 Outback XT with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets an EPA estimated 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg. The 2022 Subaru Outback with the non-turbocharged 2.5-liter Boxer engine gets an estimated 26/33 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg.
The latest Consumer Reports ranking says the 2022 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, And 2022 Crosstrek are ranked number one in their category. CR says they are three of the top-10 new SUVs you can buy right now and should be on your shopping list.
